Coin Description:
This Humbert $50 “slug” is an outstanding example of the series. While certified MS61, its quality in hand is remarkable. In my personal examination, I can identify only two small marks of note: one beneath the “M” in America on the right obverse and another above the “F” in Fifty on the lower left obverse field. When compared to certain certified MS63 examples, this piece holds its own, and in my view, presents superior overall eye appeal.
Collectors know that most Humbert $50s display heavy rim dings and indentations, yet on this coin those distractions are minimal. There is some rubbing on the eagle, which is typical for the issue, but it does not diminish the appeal. What truly sets this example apart is the reverse. The intricate design is fully struck and remains sharp, even in the most delicate areas that are often weak or worn on other specimens.
Importantly, it should be noted that the 1852 Humbert slugs are considerably rarer in Mint State than the 1851 issues, making high-grade survivors like this one all the more significant.
This is an opportunity to acquire one of the most attractive Humbert slugs known. Pieces of this caliber rarely surface, and this example offers both rarity and beauty for the discerning collector.
