VCD Auction #3:
Lot 4
1850 $5 Moffat & Co. Five Dollar AU55 PCGS. CAC
Moffat & Co. half eagles are rare, and this AU55 example is a wonderful type piece for the collector of California gold. Minted using similar dies to that of the U.S. Mint, and only a few of the legends were changed to create territorial gold. This coin was minted using gold locally sourced in California and the surrounding states, and the cataloger notes a deep yellow patina that is typical of gold sourced in this region. Even when refined to a consistent purity, gold takes on different colors of patina based on the geographic source, and this coin is a prime example of that. Light wear and some bag marks are typical of the AU55 grade, and this coin is a choice specimen at the stated condition.
