The “STC" on the ore cart in the center of the hallmark stands for Sutro Tunnel Company. The Sutro Tunnel was an enormous undertaking started in 1869, taking 10 years to complete, and served to drain water from the shafts of the Comstock Lode, as well as carry ore and provide ventilation. Comstock Tunnel & Drainage owned the Sutro Tunnel in the modern era.” ( Courtesy of W. Ricks) These were produced by Don Schmitz at the Carson City Mint in 1980 using the original silver dollar coin press. Schmitz made a number of different varieties, this being one of the more sought after varieties. Although it is not documented how many were made, these ingots are extremely rare and seldom seen.
